Books

The three books that influenced me the greatest in my life are The Goosebump Series, Harry Potter series, and  The Things They Carried

The reason why The Goosebump Series is influential in my life is because of one reason, it got me started on reading.  It is the first time that I was afraid of my own imagination and it scared the crap out of me.  I own over 30 different goosebump books.

The Harry Potter series further fermented my love for books.  I used to be terrify of big books but after reading Harry Potter, I came to a realization that each page is another adventure and didn't want to stop reading at all.  Harry Potter removed the fear of big 1000 page books for me.

The Things They Carried is another great book that have changed my views of the world.  Before I read this book, I was lead to believe that war is glorious and every man should participate.  This book shows the hardship and pain of war.  It opened my eyes to a hidden truth; war is terrifying.

my high school English project that had some of the Things They Carried stuff

Those are the books that have influenced my life.  Sure its definitely not the only one but those three stands out.

Media Impact

Fans Blame Media.  Media Blames Fans

"Britney Spear collapses as she was walking down the street"
"Britney Spear caught buying Birth control pills"
"Britney Spear seen buying pregnancy test"

Headlines like these are very exploitive of privacy and can cause people some major headache.  Britney Spear for example, has too much exposure and is contemplating suicide.  Every second of her time, she has a picture taken by a paparazzi and it's driving her insane.  The fans blame the media for continuous exposure of Britney Spear and wants them to back off so that Britney can re-cooperate.  At the same time, the media states that they are providing a service that the fans want.  If the fans doesn't demand such a stream for Britney content, they wouldn't publish so much.  So in the end, who is to blame?

week 1: autobiography

I grew up in an era where mass communication is as easy as picking up the phone.  There are 8 forms of communication that I have been familiarized with while growing up:

Books: What can I say about books?  They are amazing.  Books translate ideas of the author but through the medium of our imagination.  I love reading books.  Once a week I would go to Barnes and Noble and crack open a book while sipping on my hot chocolate.  Its a great well of information and I always love a good read.

Newspaper: Although I'm not a big fan of newspaper, I also don't dislike them.  I find them useful to find out whats going on in the world but it isn't the best form of mass communication.  When I was a child, I love reading the sport and comic sections.  Nowadays, as a poor college student, I'd probably would only read them for coupons for savings.  I also feel that they are extremely bias.

Magazine: I almost never buy magazines but when I do pick them up, I just skim through it.  Not my cup of tea.

Movies: I feel that movies plays a large role in mass communication.  An example such as The Matrix where Neo, the main character, would always wear a drench coat. During that time period, drench coat sales were going through the roof.  Nowadays, movies seem to be playing a lot of alien invasion movies and there have been a lot of sighting of U.F.O on the news.... Is this our government trying to ease us into something?

Recordings: Not big on recording.  Almost never listen to them.

Television:  I used to watch television all the time.  Nowadays, I don't find the time for t.v.  I think the last time I ever turned on the t.v. for watching television was about 3-4 years ago.

Internet:  Ah.. The internet.  This is my most preferable choice of communication.  Not only does it offer minute by minute news, it is instantly available at anytime we want.  I don't know if I can go a regular day without the internet.  My video games, my social network, my news, my homework, my work, everything is related to the internet.  The internet has been regarded as a class I communication and it won't be for another 200 years before we advance to class II.

My major is pharmaceutical sciences.  I'd like to transfer to U.O.P or U.S.F for graduate school. Mass communication isn't necessary important since most medications are prescribed by professionals in the medical field.  However, the ability to share research among other people and work on them collectively is something the internet can provide for us.  But living in a country where competition is encouraged, that isn't likely to happen.

A career in the media was something I've sometimes pondered about.  Like a movie actor :)
